Dementia – An Increasing Challenge in the Developmental Services Sector: Early Recognition and Strategies for Support

SESSION DESCRIPTION:

Information will be provided to assist with the early recognition of dementia in adults with intellectual-developmental disabilities, particularly those individuals with Down Syndrome. Early recognition can result in the development of effective Person Centered “Care” Plans that will enable direct support professionals and supervisors to continue to provide individualized support throughout a person’s life.

In this workshop, dementia risks, types, prevention and interventions will be presented. Training resources will be shared.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will be able to:

1) Identify the different types of dementia and their typical presentations;

2) Describe the essential components of a “Dementia Responsive Program”; and

3) Apply support strategies and program adaptations and accommodations that are effective in planning for an individual with dementia.
